Wizarding World in Film: The Next Generation

The Next Generation is a television drama that follows the lives of a group of youths in their moments of struggle and loss.  Its controversial storylines explores issues such as dysfunctional families, mental illness, sexuality, substance abuse, and death. The principal characters of the programme involves the children of those who famously fought in the Second Wizarding War. Each episode is central to one character or family and the challenges they face in their lives.

James - Seen as an attractive boy with charisma like his famous father, his inward disposition goes unnoticed by those around him. During his seventh year, James willingly and secretly participated in a psychological study administered by the medical council of magical society. The study was to research how individuals could consciously commit the acts of horror during the second wizarding war under obedience. Several tests were seen as unethical as it breached the limits of emotional and physical capacity. James suffers day to day from acute stress disorder, feeling extreme bouts of anxiety and depersonalization.

Albus -  In a more unconventional way of exploring one’s life, Albus’ perspective is seen through a series of dates with different people. Some dates are longer than others, some are individuals seen repeatedly at certain times of the month. With every evening is a flashback or representation of thought, visions of distinctive memories and behaviour patterns that separate each persona of Albus from the other. Clinically, this condition is seen as a form of dissociative identity disorder but he believes that one would have to suffer for it to be determined in that sense. Regardless of its authenticity, Albus understands the various images of his past and behaviours as true events in each separate life he lives.

Lily - Amongst her siblings, Lily is regarded as one with the freest spirit — the party animal in the new generation of the Potter family. Her story begins from a holiday with her friends in Morocco, much more alcohol than anticipated and too much to handle. When a childhood friend of Lily’s dies from a lethal combination of alcohol and medication, she feels responsible. In her pain, she hallucinates different scenarios in which she continuously fails to save her friend from death. Lily secretly inflicts pain on herself to endure her agony, finding solace in self-harm. She becomes physically and emotionally distant from her brothers as to not burden them further.

Teddy - Struggling with self-control and identity, Teddy Lupin begins to stray away from his adoptive family. He bends the rules at his will as a metamorphmagus and becomes estranged from his girlfriend, Victoire. Teddy comes to realization about his own loneliness — orphaned with no biological family and is desperate to have them even if he must join them himself.

Victoire - The eldest of the Delacour-Weasley family appears to have her future planned, prim and proper in every way possible. After a summer away from the UK, Victoire begins taking unprescribed medication (similar to the muggle combination drug Adderall) to focus on her studies and enhance performance. When her mother becomes aware of her dependency, Victoire is forced to stop. The symptoms of withdrawal, however, bring her to the breaking point.

Dominique - Some call her by her full name, some affectionately refer to her as Dom. Many would also say that she bears a strong resemblance to her courageous mother and elegant sister. After years of constant comparison, Dominque finds her own satisfaction in acts of rebellion. Several acts of which involve an emotionally manipulative girlfriend as she comes to terms with her sexuality. Dominique’s whereabouts is unknown to her family but she secretly visits the home of her parents from time to time in fear that one may pass without her knowledge.

Louis - He labels himself as an insatiable hedonist, a young man thriving on lust and activities of its likeness. Following the events of a high profile party, Louis takes care of a muggle-born girl abused by several young wizards belonging to an exclusive pure-blood group. The girl persuades him to change his ways but betrays her when circumstances become complicated and dangerous. Situations prove to be more difficult when Victoire is hospitalized, asking for the presence of her younger brother and sister after several months of no contact.

Rose - After participating in charitable events in honour of her family’s contribution to justice in magical society, Rose becomes highly favourable to many. She romantically involves herself with a young man who also bears his own means of fame. Their popular relationship becomes a public spectacle but Rose grows increasingly unhappy as she continues to hide her sexuality. When the younger sister of her boyfriend comforts her in the midst of her battle with anorexia, Rose begins a surreptitious affair. A private group is hired by her boyfriend to investigate her odd behaviour, fearing that she may be hiding a secret from him.

Hugo - The seeker of a professional Quidditch team is rendered to be in a comatose state following a fall from a semi-final match in Dubrovnik. Hugo Weasley’s past is conveyed through memories of his career and struggle with aggression. Before he earned his reputation, Hugo suffered moments of anger which he dealt with through illegal, underground fighting. The satisfaction he experienced through violence became a temporary answer for his problems as well as funded his alcoholic tendencies. In present day, Hugo is visited by his older sister Rose and confesses to him about her own secrets as a way to reconcile and mend their relationship.

Scorpius - One can’t help but succumb to the temptations of power. Consumed by desire, Scorpius reverts to his father’s old ways but with a more refined form of cruelty. He joins an elitist, pure-blood group of young men. In this inner circle, they commit acts of chaos — many of which are considered to be of great amusement. The series of games they play become more and more deadly as Scorpius is forced to participate in the destruction of several muggle-born owned properties. With a threat upon his life and family, Scorpius struggles to deal with his inescapable circumstance and the regret of betraying his loved ones.
